KEY TEXT:but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
John 4:14 KJV
Jesus’ comments here present some interesting facts about the nature of salvation. In order to get literal water from a well, a person has to lower a bucket, then haul up the full container. This has to be repeated as often as required in order to get more water. The water Jesus promises will become a permanent spring within the person.
In fairly direct terms, Jesus is pointing out that salvation is neither obtained nor kept through works. In fact, Jesus is contrasting the nature of salvation with the nature of human efforts. One is temporary and requires work. The other is eternal and is obtained only as a gift. Twice, in fact, Jesus refers to this “living water” as something He will give. This is not something a person could draw for themselves, even if they wanted to.
Looking at the Samaritan woman’s history, it seems she was looking for comfort in relationships (John 4:17–18). Sadly, that quest led her to live an immoral and unsatisfying life.
Many start this walk with God and fell along the way because they try to do it on their own. This gift from God is free and the water springs up in us into everlasting life.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:”
Ephesians 2:8 KJV
This woman was not a Jew but a Samaritan ,considered “unclean” with a very checked past but the master was wiling to offer Him this water for free.”Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price”
Isaiah 55:1 KJV
Beloved salvation and the gift of life is indeed for free. The poor, the broken, the rejected are all invited to this feast. All we need to do is to believe and accept this gift and this water that represents life, joy, health, wealth etc begins to grow in us.Most of the things we pursue on earth are attempts to fill the natural human longing for God.They however leave us longing for more because they can’t quench that thirst in us.The bible says”As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.
Psalms 42:1 NIV
Many thought, money could quench that thirst.Others felt it was marriage.Others also though when they obtain a visa to travel abroad, that thirst could be quenched. We all have come to the realisation that Christ only satisfies.
May we find rest and refreshment for our panting souls as we make a decision to come back to Christ.
Prayer:Lord Jesus,Satisfy my panting sou0
I love you all and my God bless you.
